Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
