Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
